TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) has declared the death of an online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver, Affan Kurniawan, after being run over by the police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) vehicle, as a case of "extrajudicial killing." The agency condemns the police for committing brutal actions that led to the loss of Affan's life.

"We urge the police to investigate this thoroughly and enforce the law fairly, transparently, firmly, and accountably against all police officers who have committed the actions of hitting and running over the late Affan Kurniawan and other victims," said Chair of Komnas HAM, Anis Hidayah, in a press release quoted on Friday, August 29, 2025.

The commission has found that the police used excessive force against protesters, which resulted in Affan's death and hundreds of others injured.

Affan Kurniawan was a ride-share driver who died after being crushed by a tactical vehicle belonging to Jakarta Metro Police's mobile brigade. This incident occurred as the police dispersed the protesters on Thursday night, August 28, 2025, near the area around Bendungan Hilir II flats, Central Jakarta.

Based on a video received by Tempo, the vehicle continued to move forward despite the victim lying on the ground. Some demonstrators were seen trying to chase and stop the vehicle.

In addition to running over people, the police also fired tear gas towards the flats. Even residents on the 10th floor claimed they could still smell the tear gas.

The demonstration in front of the parliament building actually began on Thursday morning, August 28, 2025. Initially, the demonstrators came from labor unions. They raised six demands, including the abolition of outsourcing and rejection of low wages, stopping layoffs, labor tax reform, ratification of the labor bill without an omnibus law, ratification of the asset seizure bill, and revision of the election bill. However, they dispersed on Thursday afternoon.

After that, waves of students arrived around the parliament building, coming from various campuses. They demanded the dissolution of the parliament and the revocation of excessive allowances for members of the parliament.
