TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that a magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) region again on Wednesday night, August 19, at 11:17 p.m. WIB (Western Indonesian Time).

The tremor struck the Ruteng area of Manggarai, NTT, at a depth of 10 kilometers; it posed no tsunami threat.

Shaking was felt across Manggarai Regency, West Manggarai Regency, Nagekeo Regency, and East Sumba Regency, with maximum intensities ranging from III to IV on the MMI scale.

Meanwhile, earthquakes with magnitudes below 5.0, ranging from 4.0 down to 2.0, continue to ripple through the region. Persistent aftershock activity in the Flores Back-Arc tectonic zone warrants continued vigilance among residents on Flores Island and surrounding areas.

BMKG Head Teuku Faisal Fathani estimates that aftershock activity following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake in Flores will take approximately three to four weeks to subside.

"Because this was a fairly large earthquake, magnitude 7.7, the dissipation process will take roughly three to four weeks," Teuku Faisal Fathani said in Jakarta on Wednesday.

As of 5:00 p.m. WIB on Wednesday, the BMKG had recorded 3,055 aftershocks, with magnitudes ranging from a high of 6.2 to a low of 1.1. Of that total, 88 quakes were felt by the public.

"The number of aftershocks recorded up to 5 p.m. today, August 19, 2026, stands at 3,055," Faisal stated.

The BMKG continues to monitor seismic activity in real time while delivering updates to the public in affected areas and evacuation centers. The BMKG urges affected residents not to occupy buildings or homes that have sustained structural cracks and are deemed unsafe, in order to avoid the risk of collapse caused by aftershocks.

Additionally, the public is advised to remain calm, disregard unverified rumors or hoaxes regarding the disaster, and stay updated on official tectonic data through BMKG's verified applications and communication channels.
