TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - French President Emmanuel Macron said he had spoken with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to urge him to refrain from launching a ground offensive into Lebanon.
"I urged the Israeli Prime Minister to preserve Lebanon’s territorial integrity and to refrain from a ground offensive. It is important that the parties return to the ceasefire agreement," Macron said via the X platform on Wednesday (March 4).
Macron added that France would work with its partners to support the Lebanese armed forces in their efforts to confront Hezbollah and would take urgent steps to assist Lebanese displaced amid the humanitarian crisis in the country's south.
The French president also mentioned that he had spoken with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
The talks between the two followed Aoun's Tuesday (March 3) call on Macron to use his influence with Israel to halt Israeli troop advances in southern Lebanon.
Aoun made the request after French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot stated that France was ready to defend its partners in the Middle East if they asked for help.
