TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Norwegian chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen has maintained his position as the world's top-ranked player in the latest update of the World Chess Federation (FIDE) ratings. Following his participation in the 2025 World Chess Championship, Carlsen gained two additional points, bringing his total rating to 2839.

“Magnus Carlsen continues his reign at the top,” stated FIDE via Instagram, reaffirming his status as the best player in the world.

Trailing closely behind is American player Hikaru Nakamura, who holds second place with 2807 points. Fabiano Caruana climbed to third place with 2784 points, while Indian prodigy Praggnanandhaa R made a significant leap, rising three spots to fourth with 2779 points.

Arjun Erigaisi dropped to fifth with 2776 points, sharing the same rating as Gukesh Dommaraju, who currently ranks sixth.

About Magnus Carlsen

Sven Magnus Oen Carlsen, widely known as Magnus Carlsen, was born in Tonsberg, Norway, on November 30, 1990. According to Royal Chess Mall, Carlsen exhibited remarkable intelligence from an early age, managing to complete a 50-piece puzzle at the age of two.

He began learning chess at the age of five under the guidance of his father, and by age 10, he was training with Norwegian chess master Simen Agdestein.

Carlsen earned the title of International Master in August 2003 at the age of 12. Just eight months later, in April 2004, he became one of the youngest players to attain the Grandmaster title, achieving it at 13 years and four months old. In January 2010, he became the youngest player to top the FIDE world rankings.

In 2013, Carlsen claimed the title of World Chess Champion after defeating Viswanathan Anand in Chennai, India. He successfully defended this title in 2014 against Anand once more, in 2016 against Sergey Karjakin, in 2018 against Fabiano Caruana, and in 2021 against Ian Nepomniachtchi.

Carlsen has also dominated in other formats of the game. In 2014, he won both the World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships in Dubai, scoring 11 out of 15 in rapid and 17 out of 21 in blitz. This made him the first player to simultaneously hold the world titles in classical, rapid, and blitz formats. Since then, he has won the World Rapid title five times and the Blitz title eight times.

Carlsen achieved his peak FIDE rating of 2882 in May 2014, which remains one of the highest ratings in history. This milestone was supported by a record-breaking unbeaten streak of 125 games. Over the years, he has held the world’s top position longer than any previous champion, including Garry Kasparov.
