Minister Explains Why Indonesia, Malaysia Opt for Joint Ambalat Block Management

2 days ago 8

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin has revealed the reasoning behind Indonesia's decision to cooperate with Malaysia in managing the Ambalat Waters in Nunukan, North Kalimantan. The Ambalat Block had previously been a long-standing disputed area between the two countries.

"We need to avoid conflicts related to Ambalat. As neighboring countries, we should live harmoniously," Sjafrie said when met at the parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday, July 2, 2025.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining harmony with neighboring nations, asserting that the best approach for Indonesia and Malaysia is to jointly manage the natural resources.

"By targeting mutual benefits but based on mutual respect for the sovereignty of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia and also respecting the sovereignty of Malaysia," he added.

During a bilateral meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Friday, June 27, 2025, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim agreed to settle border disputes and jointly manage the Ambalat Block.

Indonesia and Malaysia are reportedly forming a joint authority to manage the border area, particularly in Ambalat.

Following his meeting with Prabowo, Anwar Ibrahim stated that the management of the Ambalat block must commence immediately, even if maritime issues in the area are not fully resolved. The two countries have agreed to establish a joint development authority as a collaborative effort to manage the oil and gas resources in Ambalat.
