TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cities with rich cultural and natural attractions continue to draw millions of tourists each year. Travelers often visit these destinations in search of rest and rejuvenation. However, not all popular cities provide a relaxing vacation experience.
Many tourist hotspots end up feeling stressful due to factors such as overcrowding, uncomfortable weather, or safety concerns.
Most and Least Stressful Cities to Visit in 2025
A recent study by property rental company Ibiza Summer Villas has compiled a list of the most stressful cities to visit in 2025.
The research analyzed 51 of the world's most visited cities and ranked them based on five criteria: tourist density, crime rate, humidity, online search trends, and how frequently stress is mentioned in tourist reviews.
Paris Takes the Top Spot: The Most Stressful City
Paris was named the most stressful city for travelers. Though known for its romantic charm, the French capital is extremely crowded, receiving 47.5 million tourists within an area of just 105 square kilometers.
This results in an overwhelming density of 450,664 visitors per square kilometer, which is over ten times that of New York City.
The study also found a 24 percent increase in global search interest for Paris, indicating rising tourist demand. In such a densely packed environment, the ideal of a calm and romantic vacation can be difficult to achieve.
Hanoi and Shanghai Follow
Hanoi, Vietnam, ranked second. High humidity levels were a major stressor, with the city experiencing 84 percent humidity, the highest recorded in the study.
Hanoi also scored poorly on crime and ranked fourth for the number of reviews that mentioned stress. A 19 percent increase in search interest suggests that the city’s crowding issue may worsen.
Shanghai, China, ranked third. With 300 million visitors annually and a density of 47,318 tourists per square kilometer, the city is heavily congested. A dramatic 64 percent rise in search interest has further pushed Shanghai to become one of the fastest-growing destinations in terms of popularity.
Other stressful cities include Berlin, Ho Chi Minh City, Kuala Lumpur, London, Hong Kong, Cairo, and Rome. Singapore and Phuket were also listed, ranking 16th and 19th, respectively.
Dubai, Munich, and Melbourne Offer Relief
At the other end of the spectrum, Dubai was named the least stressful city to visit. Despite welcoming 17.1 million tourists per year, the city’s large urban sprawl places it only 43rd in terms of tourist density. Dubai also has the second lowest crime rate in the study and benefits from relatively dry, manageable humidity levels.
Munich, Germany, was the second least stressful city. It sees just 8.5 million tourists annually, with a moderate density of 27,357 visitors per square kilometer. The city’s low crime rate, mild weather, and 16 percent drop in search interest make it a peaceful choice for travelers.
Melbourne, Australia, placed third for its low stress levels. With only 1,265 tourists per square kilometer, it has the lowest tourist density among all cities in the study. Melbourne’s spacious layout and calm atmosphere make it one of the most relaxed destinations to visit in 2025.
