Mount Merapi Spews Pyroclastic Flows Nine Times Overnight

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Merapi has spewed pyroclastic flows nine times overnight into early Monday, November 3, 2025.

This phenomenon comes after the increasing intensity of rainfall in the area. The series of pyroclastic flows with a maximum slide distance of 2500 meters is heading southwest to Kali Sat/Putih, Bebeng, and Krasak.

In addition to the pyroclastic flows, 19 instances of lava avalanches heading in the same direction were also recorded, with a maximum slide distance of 2000 meters.

Volcanic Activity of Mount Merapi Remains at Alert Level III

The Head of the Yogyakarta Geological Disaster Technology Investigation and Development Center (BPPTKG), Agus Budi Santoso, urged residents to remain aware of the danger of lava and pyroclastic flows.

"The people must be aware of the dangers of lava and pyroclastic flows, especially during rainfall around Mount Merapi," he said on Monday, November 3, 2025.

The Alert Status of Mount Merapi has not changed since November 5, 2020, or since its volcanic activity started picking up. BPPTKG monitoring data show that magma supply is still ongoing and can trigger the occurrence of pyroclastic flows within the potential danger zone.

"The community should not engage in any activities in the potential danger zone," he said.

Impact of pyroclastic flows

He explained that the current potential dangers include lava avalanches and pyroclastic flows in the south-southwest sector, including Boyong River up to a maximum of 5 kilometers, Bedog, Krasak, and Bebeng rivers up to a maximum of 7 kilometers.

In the southeastern sector, it includes Woro River up to a maximum of 3 kilometers and Gendol River up to 5 kilometers. Meanwhile, the volcanic material ejected during an explosive eruption can reach a radius of 3 kilometers from the mountain peak.

"The people also need to anticipate disturbances due to volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Merapi," he said.

The impact of the pyroclastic flows from Mount Merapi this time includes the rain of volcanic ashes, covering the eastern side of Mount Merapi or around Bukit Klangon, Cangkringan, Sleman Regency.
