TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was killed in an Israeli and U.S. attack in Iran, according to Israeli media reports on Sunday, March 1, 2026.
The attack targeted Ahmadinejad's residence in Narnak, northeast of Tehran, killing him and several guards, as reported by Iranian media such as Ynet.
The strike in Narnak likely occurred on Saturday night, according to international media reports.
Israeli media reported the assassination, depicting it as part of an ongoing campaign targeting senior Iranian figures.
Ahmadinejad served as the president of Iran from 2005 to 2013.
Known for his hardline rhetoric, he took a confrontational stance toward the West and drew international attention to Iran's nuclear program.
His presidency was also marked by the disputed 2009 election results and the subsequent mass protests that swept across Iran.
Prior to his presidency, Ahmadinejad served as the governor of Ardabil Province and the mayor of Tehran.
After two terms in office, he was appointed by the then Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, to the Expediency Discernment Council—a 48-member advisory council to the Office of the Supreme Leader.
Ahmadinejad's death comes just hours after the killing of 86-year-old Khamenei at his residence by an Israeli-U.S. attack.
