Netherlands to Assist in Preserving Cultural Heritage in Depok, Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Depok - The Ambassador of the Netherlands to Indonesia, East Timor, and ASEAN, Marc Gerritsen, said that his government is assisting in the development of cultural heritage in Depok, West Java, Indonesia. Marc sees Depok as having a lot of historical heritage and a city with a bright future.

"A city where you can walk from one beautiful historical site to another, a green city, and maybe a city where you can ride bicycles," said Marc, accompanied by Deputy Mayor of Depok, Chandra Rahmansyah, on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.

Today, Marc and Chandra attended the soft launching of Depok Heritage at the YLCC building on Pemuda Street, Number 72, Pancoran Mas District, Depok, on Wednesday, April 16, 2025. Marc stated that he has heard the commitment of the Depok City government to develop the Old Town as an area for all its residents.

"The city (Depok) could be a place where people can truly enjoy the city, nature, without cars, but still maintain cultural heritage and a good communal life," explained Marc.

Marc evaluates that Depok and the Netherlands have a special bond to build the region's future. The local government, represented by Chandra Rahmansyah, has also submitted a proposal to the Netherlands to assist in the preservation and development of cultural heritage in Depok.

"In terms of preserving cultural heritage, because we have a lot of knowledge and expertise, and maybe we can bring in some experts to Depok," he said.

He mentioned that the Dutch government could also help in developing the Old Town in Depok, as a bicycle and pedestrian-friendly area.

"Including culinary. If you want to have a comfortable city to live in, you need good restaurants, places like eateries would be incredible, and I see that it is already starting to happen," he said.

As a first step, Marc added, they will consider proposals from the government to assist in developing Depok Heritage.

"We will seek experts from the Netherlands to be brought to Depok to assist in developing this city," said Marc Gerritsen.
