TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Residents unfurled a banner reading "Pray for Ladur and Riung Villages: Overlooked by the Government" along the Reo-Ruteng highway in Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
Dozens of residents staged a road blockade to intercept logistics vehicles transporting basic food aid from Ruteng to the Reo area.
A community representative, Hironimus Yance, stated that dozens of villagers from Ladur and Riung were driven to set up the blockade after receiving no aid from either regional or central authorities since the earthquake hit NTT on Saturday, August 15, 2026. "We feel like we've been treated like stepchildren," he said at the scene on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
The distance between the main evacuation center in Reo and Ladur Village is roughly 27 kilometers, a 15-minute drive. Hironimus noted that government officials had yet to inspect the villagers' condition, five days after the earthquake devastated NTT.
Yet, he emphasized, the community remains in desperate need of basic foodstuffs and medical supplies. Numerous homes in the village have also sustained structural damage. "Economic activity among residents has come to a complete standstill," he said.
According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the death toll from the magnitude 7.7 earthquake in NTT has reached 71 as of Wednesday.
Additionally, 1,182 people have been documented as injured. The disaster has also displaced 40,040 residents across the region. The majority of evacuees are currently concentrated in Manggarai, Nagekeo, and Sikka regencies.
President Prabowo Subianto has yet to visit NTT in the wake of the earthquake. However, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi confirmed that the President intends to travel to the affected area.
Prasetyo Hadi assured that while President Prabowo has not yet visited the disaster zone in person, the government has fully mobilized relief operations across the territory.
