TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The artificial intelligence (AI) firm OpenAI has announced that ChatGPT will no longer be available on the WhatsApp messaging app as of January 15, 2026. This decision to withdraw access lines up with Meta's ban on the use of external conversational AI services through WhatsApp Business contacts.
As known, the AI chatbot service ChatGPT on WhatsApp has been available since December 2024, enabling users to send messages to official business accounts at 1-800-242-8478. However, Meta has its own AI-Meta AI, which can be used within the WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram applications.
"ChatGPT will remain available on WhatsApp until that date, and we’ll send reminders along the way," OpenAI wrote on its website on Tuesday, October 21, 2025.
Although the service will be discontinued, OpenAI has stated that all chat histories with the AI chatbot can be retained by linking the WhatsApp number to the ChatGPT platform. However, conversations within WhatsApp after January 15, 2026, will not be automatically transferred.
OpenAI also recommends that users switch back to the ChatGPT platform through the mobile or PC application. If users have linked their WhatsApp number, the conversation history will also appear on the ChatGPT platform. "You can link your ChatGPT account through 1-800-ChatGPT’s contact profile in WhatsApp and click the URL there," OpenAI wrote.
Prior to this, Meta amended terms and conditions for AI service providers on WhatsApp Business. It stipulates that third-party AI providers and developers are prohibited from accessing or using the WhatsApp Business Solution to provide AI services.
Cited from the WhatsApp site, Meta warns, "We may terminate your account and revoke your access if we reasonably determine that you have breached these restrictions."
