TEMPO.CO, JakartaPhilips Vermonte, Spokesperson at the Presidential Communication Office, revealed that Prabowo’s visit to Turkey is a follow-up to an invitation from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan when he visited Indonesia in February 2025.

"During their last meeting in Jakarta, the Indonesian people warmly welcomed President Erdogan. President Prabowo personally welcomed him at the airport, accompanied him to the hotel, and then escorted him back to the airport when he departed," said Philips Vermonte in a press release in Jakarta on Thursday, April 10, 2025.

Philips stated that when President Erdogan visited Bogor Palace, West Java, more than 5,000 students and citizens greeted the Turkish president along the routes leading to Bogor Palace, with an entourage of 75 cavalry personnel.

According to Philips, the reception impressed Erdogan. He even stated that in his political career, as the 12th President of Turkey, he had never received such a warm welcome before.

During the meeting, 13 cooperation agreements were signed, covering the fields of energy, industry, education, and religious affairs, with the potential to expand into other strategic sectors.

Prabowo’s visit to Turkey aims to bolster bilateral ties between the two countries, as well as signify Indonesia's commitment to promoting world peace, including resolving the conflict in Palestine.

"As middle powers and countries with a Muslim-majority population, both countries play a strategic role in continuously fostering the spirit of peace, especially in relation to the conflict in Palestine," said Philips.

Indonesia, Philips stated, is not part of the Arab League. However, the Indonesian government fully supports the Cairo Declaration made last March, which calls for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, put forward in the Ministerial Conference of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

Philips stated that the Indonesian government, in cooperation with the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) and the National Zakat Agency (Baznas), has raised funds amounting to US$200 million to aid the Palestinian people.

Furthermore, Philips said, President Prabowo's visit would also enhance economic cooperation with Turkey. There are still ample opportunities to strengthen the bilateral trade relationship, in line with the previous commitment to achieve balanced trade values of up to US$10 billion.

Prabowo is currently on a Middle Eastern tour, making stops at the UAE, Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, and Jordan to seek support for the plan to evacuate 1,000 Palestinians from Gaza to Indonesia.

Prabowo stated that the Indonesian government is ready to receive and care for the wounded and orphaned Palestinian children who are victims of Israel's genocide in Gaza. Prabowo estimated that there would be a thousand people in the first wave of the Gaza evacuees to Indonesia.
