TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Lily Pujiati, the chair of the Indonesian Public Transportation Workers Union (SPAI), announced that the online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver who was run over by a police mobile brigade's car on late Thursday, August 28, 2025, has passed away. Video footage on social media has shown that an armored vehicle ran over the driver while the police were dispersing protesters near Bendungan HIlir II flats, Central Jakarta.
"The body is at the Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo National Hospital," said Lily when confirmed by Tempo tonight.
According to one of the flat's residents, Kevin, the armored vehicle ran over an ojol driver who had fallen in the middle of the road. "There was a motorcycle taxi driver who fell and was hit. But the vehicle did not stop and just moved forward until it ran over the victim," Kevin told Tempo on Thursday night, August 28, 2025.
Kevin mentioned that the police initially held back protesters around the Pejompongan gas station. Around 7:25 p.m., the armored vehicle sped through the road all of a sudden without concerns about the gathering crowd.
Tear Gas Fired Toward Nearby Flats
In addition to running over people, the police also fired tear gas towards nearby flats. "Even the residents on the tenth floor could still smell the tear gas," said Kevin.
Kevin revealed that the tear gas was shot by the police at about 10 to 20 meters away from the building's entrance gate. "Elderly people and children near the gate were also affected by the tear gas," said Kevin.
Meanwhile, based on Tempo's observations around Gatot Subroto Street, dozens of students were stopped on their way to the parliament complex. They were immediately arrested and taken into the Jakarta Metro Police Headquarters.
These students were forcibly stopped from riding their motorbikes. Some of them even fell from their bikes and were left limping.
The officers appeared to be stopping dozens of students without wearing official uniforms. They even beat and kicked some students without clear reasons.
One of the arrested students claimed to have no intention of joining the protest. "I just came back from school, sir," the student shouted while pleading to be released.
