TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto received a visit from former Australian Prime Minister Paul Keating at the hotel where he stayed during his visit to Sydney on Wednesday, November 12, 2025. After the meeting, Prabowo admitted that he gained many insights from Keating.

"I think it was very good. He is very experienced. Keating's thoughts are very clear. He has extensive experience. So, I feel that I gained a lot from his thoughts," said Prabowo in his press statement to the media seen on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel.

Prabowo said several topics were discussed with Keating, including international relations, the economy, and geopolitics. "So many," he said.

The Head of State also stated that Indonesia and Australia have mutual interests in strengthening bilateral relations. For him, cooperation with Australia benefits both countries and the region.

"If we work together well in all fields, this will bring enormous benefits for both countries and for our entire region," he said.

Before this meeting, Prabowo Subianto and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reached a new agreement in defense and security. Albanese stated that the two countries had concluded negotiations on cooperation in defense and security. He said that this agreement reaffirms both countries' commitment to maintaining peace and stability together.

"This agreement acknowledges that the best way to maintain peace and stability is by acting together," said Albanese from the deck of the Australian aircraft carrier HMAS Canberra docked in Sydney, Australia, on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, as observed on the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel.

He said that this new agreement is a continuation of the landmark security agreement signed by the government of Paul Keating and former President Soeharto 30 years ago. The two countries will also strengthen the Lombok Treaty between Indonesia and Australia on November 13, 2025. Albanese says this agreement reaffirms Indonesia's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Albanese stated that this agreement will bind the leaders and ministers of Indonesia and Australia to consult regularly. Mutually beneficial security activities will be identified and carried out through consultations. "And to carry out mutually beneficial security activities," he said.
