Prabowo Discusses U.S. Tariff Policy with Several ASEAN Leaders

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto engaged in telephone discussions with leaders from four ASEAN member countries to coordinate responses to the reciprocal tariff policy recently announced by United States President Donald Trump.

Prabowo exchanged views with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.

"Today, I held a phone conversation with leaders of several ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, the Philippines, Brunei Darussalam, and Singapore, to exchange views and coordinate a collective response to the issue of reciprocal tariffs imposed by the United States (US)," said Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on his Instagram.

He stated that the upcoming ASEAN Economic Ministers' Meeting will further address the discussion regarding optimal solutions to counter the application of the U.S. reciprocal tariffs.

"The upcoming ASEAN Economic Ministers’ Meeting next week will continue deliberations on this matter and seek the best possible solution for all member countries," he added.

The reciprocal tariffs imposed by the U.S. on ASEAN countries are as follows: 24 percent for Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam, 17 percent for the Philippines, 10 percent for Singapore, 49 percent for Cambodia, 48 percent for Laos, 46 percent for Vietnam, 44 percent for Myanmar, 36 percent for Thailand, and 32 percent for Indonesia.

The Indonesian Presidential Communication Office (PCO) previously outlined three strategic steps taken by President Prabowo to anticipate and mitigate global economic challenges, including those arising from the new import tariff policy.

Deputy for Dissemination and Media Information of the Presidential Communication Office, Noudhy Valdryno, stated that these three steps include: expanding Indonesia's trade partnerships, accelerating the downstreaming of natural resources, and strengthening domestic consumption resilience.
