TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Visiting Miangas Island in North Sulawesi on Saturday, May 9, 2026, President Prabowo Subianto shares his plan to build a fisherfolk village on Indonesia's northernmost island.
"Hopefully there will be a village for fisherfolk here in the near future," Prabowo says, as reported by the Presidential Secretariat on Saturday.
The Gerindra Party chair mentions an ice maker and cold storage facilities to be established in the future village, as well as special gas station for fishers.
During his visit, Prabowo highlights the accomplishment of former President Joko Widodo, who launched the Miangas Airport in 2016 after four years of construction.
In a similar vein, President Prabowo is now seeking to build facilities to assist Miangas' fisherfolk. "Since there is an airport already, perhaps we can market the fishery products to increase [the fishers'] income," he said.
The Indonesian government has thus far provided a 15-gross-ton vessel assistance for Miangas, according to Prabowo.
Prabowo is visiting Miangas after his trip to Cebu, Philippines, for the 48th ASEAN Summit.
Miangas is Indonesia's northernmost outpost on the border with the Philippines, situated within the Talaud Islands Regency of North Sulawesi. Prabowo touched down at Miangas Airport on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at approximately 10:45 AM local time.
Prabowo arrived in Miangas directly via a flight from the Philippines. "He returned to the homeland today, but prior to heading to Jakarta, he made a stopover for several agendas there," Sugiono stated, as reported by the Presidential Secretariat on Saturday.
The President's arrival in Miangas Island was greeted by several members of the Red and White Cabinet. Among those present were Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, and Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono.
Also in attendance were Communication and Digital Minister Meutya Hafid, Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo, Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin, and Deputy Commander of the Indonesian National Armed Forces General Tandyo Budi Revita.
