TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto said Pakistan is willing to send doctors to Indonesia, as Indonesia has a "vast need for doctors and dentists." He conveyed this after holding bilateral talks with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Islamabad, Pakistan, on Tuesday, December 9, 2025.
The head of state said Pakistan is also willing to send medical professors and experts to Indonesia. Prabowo also mentioned that Indonesia is starting a massive education program in healthcare.
"So, your assistance will be very strategic and critical for us. We really appreciate that," he said.
Additionally, Prabowo said he has instructed his ministers to expedite trade relations with Pakistan, as well as accelerate cooperation in the education, agriculture, and technology sectors.
The Indonesian and Pakistani leaders also coordinated on foreign policy issues, especially about the genocide in Gaza, Palestine. He emphasized that the Indonesian government supports a two-state solution to resolve the conflict between Palestine and Israel.
In September 2025, Prabowo had planned to open 30 medical faculties in several universities, without mentioning a detailed timeline. The head of state also planned to open 148 new study programs in 57 medical faculties this year. Details include 125 specialist programs and 23 subspecialist programs.
The plan was announced to address the shortage of doctors in Indonesia. Prabowo mentioned that Indonesia lacks 70,000 specialists and 140,000 general practitioners. "If not acted upon immediately, we may have to wait 35 years," Prabowo said in August.
