President Prabowo Set to Join Eid al-Adha Prayer at Istiqlal Mosque

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Acting Grand Imam of Istiqlal Mosque, Mulawarman Hannase, stated that President Prabowo Subianto will attend the Eid al-Adha prayer at Istiqlal Mosque, Jakarta, on Friday, July 6, 2025.

"On June 6, we will hold the national Eid al-Adha prayer. Insha Allah, the President of Indonesia, Bapak Prabowo Subianto, will attend," said Mulawarman in a press conference for Eid al-Adha preparations as quoted from the Istiqlal Mosque's YouTube channel on June 4, 2025.

Mulawarman mentioned that after the Eid prayer, President and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka will hand over qurbani (sacrifice) animals to the Istiqlal Mosque's qurbani committee. Meanwhile, the slaughtering of the qurbani animals donated by the President and other Muslim worshipers to the Istiqlal Mosque will take place the day after Eid al-Adha.

Mulawarman stated that this year's Eid al-Adha will differ from previous ones. This year, there will be a meal of the president's qurbani cow shared with orphaned children at the Istiqlal Mosque. The committee plans to invite two thousand orphans from around Jabodetabek.

"We will have the meal at Istiqlal after we slaughter the qurbani animals on Sunday, June 8," he said.

However, Mulawarman mentioned that it cannot be confirmed whether President Prabowo will also join the meal with orphaned children.

Abu Hurairah, Chairperson of the Istiqlal Mosque's qurbani committee, urged worshippers who want to pray on the main floor to arrive for the Fajr prayer. Consequently, Istiqlal will begin the Eid prayer precisely at 7:00 AM local time. However, people who arrive at 6:00 AM or later can still pray in the mosque's courtyard.

"We also urge everyone to leave valuable items at home and to help maintain the cleanliness and sanctity of the Istiqlal Mosque," said Abu Hurairah.

He requested that worshippers should not leave behind any items they bring, such as plastic water bottles, newspaper mats, or plastic bags. In addition, worshippers are asked not to go back and forth to the toilet because the number of worshippers present is expected to be overwhelming.

"Since there is no tradition of homecoming during the Eid al-Adha holiday, we estimate that more people will attend the Eid al-Adha prayer than the Eid al-Fitr prayer," he said.

Abu Hurairah also explained the reason the Istiqlal Mosque will perform the animal slaughtering on Saturday. He stated that the estimated number of worshipers will be around 100,000 to 150,000. Therefore, the slaughtering will be done a day later for convenience.

Furthermore, the Istiqlal Mosque will not distribute the qurbani meat directly. Instead, the committee will distribute the meat through accepted proposals.

"Currently, we have received a large number of proposals from orphanages, nursing homes, institutions for people with disabilities, mosques, study groups, and campuses," said Abu Hurairah.

Abu Hurairah mentioned that the Istiqlal Mosque currently has received around 60 qurbani cows. These cows were donated by various parties, including the president, vice president, Minister of Religious Affairs, Ministry of Home Affairs, former president Megawati Soekarnoputri, the National Police Chief, Governor of Bank Indonesia, Governor of DKI Jakarta, and several ministries.

The committee also received contributions from individuals, state-owned enterprises, Shopee, Le Minerale (a bottled water company), Huawei, and Unilever.

"The most unique contribution, which occurs every year, is the gift of qurbani animals from the priests at the Jakarta Cathedral," said Abu Hurairah.
