TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The sales of PlayStation 5 or PS5 have decreased amid the rise in the price of the Sony console since its launch in 2020. This situation occurred as the production costs of hardware and components continue to increase.
Upon its initial release, the PS5 was priced at US$399 or around Rp6.9 million for the Digital Edition and US$499 or around Rp8.7 million for the Disc Edition. However, after several price adjustments, Sony is now selling the Digital Edition for around US$599 or around Rp10.4 million and the Disc version for around US$649 or around Rp11.3 million. The latest price increase happened in March 2026 with an additional nearly US$100 compared to the initial launch price.
This increase has started to impact sales performance. Sony recorded the sale of 1.5 million PS5 units in the quarter ending March 31, 2026. This figure is a decrease from 2.8 million units in the same period the previous year, marking a decline of over 46 percent annually.
Annually, PS5 sales also dropped from 18 million units in fiscal year 2024 to 16.5 million units in fiscal year 2025. However, the total global sales of PS5 have now reached 93.7 million units, although it still falls short of the PlayStation 4's achievement in the same lifecycle phase.
Sony stated that the increase in memory chip and component costs has been the main factor putting pressure on the PlayStation business. Sony's President and CEO, Hiroki Totoki, mentioned that the higher costs not only affect console sales, but also software device income, PlayStation subscriptions, and accessories. On the other hand, consumers are also increasingly reluctant to purchase older hardware devices at higher prices. Many users had previously anticipated that the price of the PS5 would decrease as the console aged.
Despite the slow sales, Sony stated that it does not plan to increase the price of the PS5 in the near future and will maintain the current price structure. Sony also remains optimistic about its gaming business in the coming fiscal year. The company expects profits to grow by around 30 percent, driven by the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI) in the upcoming November.
Additionally, Sony confirmed that the development of PlayStation 6 is still ongoing. However, investments in research, chip development, and new generation hardware are expected to continue to affect the company's profits in the near future.
