Rescuers Suspend Search for West Java Quarry Landslide Missing Victims

1 day ago 6

TEMPO.CO, Cirebon - The joint Search and Rescue (SAR) team has once again suspended the search for victims buried under the debris of a collapsed quarry in Mount Kuda, Cipanas Village, Dukupuntang District, Cirebon Regency, due to subsequent landslides.

The District Military Commander (Dandim) 0620 of Cirebon Regency, Lieutenant Colonel Inf. M. Yusron, explained that rescuers had searched for the 4 people remaining buried under the debris.

This search was carried out following the morning assessment conducted by the Mining Inspectorate at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources using a total station, after which they were allowed to run the search.

"The joint SAR team has cleared the debris to the lower side so that the excavator can work around the rocks to retrieve the debris suspected to contain the bodies," said Yusron on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.

However, Yusron continued, at around 1:30 p.m. local time, they decided to temporarily halt the search process due to subsequent landslides. This decision came after the monitoring through a total station that showed a 4-meter shift in a short period of time.

"There has been a total shift of 9 meters from the initial point in the last three days. This condition is quite dangerous," said Yusron.

This condition is exacerbated by the emergence of water flow in the middle sector of worksheet A, which has the potential to trigger further soil movement. Authorities also cannot confirm how long the landslide will continue.

"The landslide could occur in 1 minute, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 1 hour, 1 day, and so on," said Yusron.

Yusron stated that the search was halted for the safety of the rescuers, meaning no progress has been made in finding the victims who are buried under the Mount Kuda landslide debris on the fifth and sixth days.

During this time, Yusron continued, rescuers have been making evacuation efforts in the unsafe areas marked as the red zone.

"With the landslide occurring at a height of 219 meters, the safe point should be located at a distance of 1.5 times the height of the cliff, which is about 350 meters. However, the SAR team continues the search in the vulnerable area for humanitarian reasons," he added.

The number of victims of the quarry collapse is estimated to reach 25, with the bodies of 21 people already found. It is estimated that four people remain missing.
