TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Russia has launched its largest aerial assault strike since its invasion of Ukraine over three years ago. The seven-hour attacks took place overnight until Friday morning, July 4, 2025, targeting the capital Kyiv and several other regions.
According to CBS News, at least 23 people were injured, and significant damage occurred in various districts. Explosions were heard throughout the city, accompanied by air raid sirens. Streets were filled with debris, and flames were visible from tall buildings. "It was a harsh, sleepless night," said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Russia reportedly launched over 550 drones and missiles into Ukrainian territory, including more than 330 Shahed drones made in Iran and eleven missiles of various types, including ballistic missiles.
Launched During Trump and Putin's Phone Call
The attack began on the same day U.S. President Donald Trump made a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Zelensky said the timing of the attack was no coincidence.
"The first air raids in our cities and regions began yesterday almost simultaneously with the start of media discussions of President Trump's phone call with Putin," Zelensky wrote in a statement, quoted from Kyiv Independent.
Zelensky sees the overnight attack as a sign that Moscow has no interest in ending the war. Trump, in a statement after the call, expressed disappointment. "I haven't made any progress with it today," Trump said about peace efforts with Putin. "I'm not happy about that. I don't think he's looking to stop the war," he revealed.
Putin's foreign policy advisor, Yuri Ushakov, stated that Russia will continue to launch attacks on Ukraine. "Russia will not back down from these goals," Ushakov said. Trump stated that he would contact Zelensky on Friday.
Stalled Peace Negotiations
Peace efforts led by the United States have yet to yield significant results. Direct negotiations between the two parties have only resulted in sporadic prisoner exchanges. On Friday, Ukraine and Russia again conducted a prisoner exchange, although no details on the number were provided.
Zelensky mentioned that many of the Ukrainian soldiers released were severely wounded and seriously ill, and had been held by Russia since 2022. He reiterated his call for air defense support from allied nations to counter the escalating air attacks from Russia.
