TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Chair of Indonesia's House of Representatives, Setya Novanto, publicly known as Setnov, has officially been granted parole and is required to report to the Bandung Penitentiary (Bapas Bandung) until April 1, 2029.
"Since August 16, 2025, Setya Novanto's status has changed from inmate to correctional client at the Bandung Penitentiary," said Rika Aprianti, Head of the Directorate of Cooperation at the Directorate General of Corrections, Ministry of Law and Human Rights, in an official statement on Sunday, August 17.
His parole is based on the Minister of Law and Human Rights' Decision Letter Number PAS-1423 PK.05.03 dated August 15, 2025. As a result, Novanto has been officially released from Sukamiskin Penitentiary.
Rika explained that Novanto was convicted of violating Article 3 jo Article 18 of the Anti-Corruption Law. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison, fined Rp 500 million or six additional months of incarceration, and ordered to repay Rp 49 billion or serve an extra two years. The Supreme Court later revised the ruling, reducing his prison term to 12 years and six months.
"Setya Novanto must receive guidance from the Correctional Guidance Officer at Bapas Bandung until April 1, 2029," Rika added.
His parole request was approved by the Trial and Parole Board at the Directorate General of Corrections on August 10, 2025. The recommendation was forwarded to the leadership and approved along with 1,000 other inmate integration programs across Indonesia.
According to Rika, Novanto fulfilled both administrative and substantive requirements, showing good behavior, actively participating in correctional activities, and demonstrating reduced risk.
He also met the legal condition of serving two-thirds of his sentence and had paid the fine and restitution.
