TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Seven personnel from the Jakarta Metro Jaya Regional Police's Mobile Brigade (Brimob) are undergoing examination over the death of an online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver in the area of Bendungan Hilir II flats, Central Jakarta. The incident occurred when a police tactical vehicle obstructed a protest and ran over the ojol driver, resulting in the driver's death on Thursday, August 28, 2025.
The Chief of the Professional and Security Division (Propam) of the Indonesian National Police, Inspector General Abdul Karim, mentioned that the seven Brimob members had the initials of police commissioner CD, police 2nd sub-inspector M, chief brigadier R, 1st brigadier D, 2nd brigadier M, senior patrolman Y, and senior patrolman D. "They have been secured," Karim said during a press conference at the Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo National Central Hospital (RSCM) on Thursday night, August 28, 2025.
Karim stated that the Indonesian National Police's Propam is collaborating with the Brimob Corps of the Jakarta Metro Jaya Regional Police for the examination. He promised that the entire legal process would be applied to the members who violated the regulations.
The Jakarta Metro Jaya Regional Police Chief, Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri, expressed condolences and apologized for the incident. "This sorrow becomes a lesson for everyone. I emphasize that members who committed mistakes and violations in the previous incident will be dealt with," Asep told the media at RSCM.
Meanwhile, the Chairperson of the Indonesian Transportation Workers Union (SPAI), Lily Pujiati, strongly condemned the actions of the Brimob police unit that hit the protesters. She urged the Chief of the Indonesian National Police, General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, to take responsibility for the incident that resulted in the death of her fellow professional. "This repressive action resulted in casualties and injuries," Lily told Tempo.
Lily advised all ojol drivers in Indonesia to stand together and monitor the case. She requested a thorough investigation of the case of the ojol driver's death caused by being run over by a tactical vehicle.
"We also seek the public's support in monitoring the developments of this event to prevent further violent actions that cause casualties," Lily stated.
From a circulated video, the victim was run over by a tactical vehicle as the police obstructed the protesters in the area of Bendungan Hilir II flats, Central Jakarta. According to one of the residents of the flats, Kevin, the tactical vehicle ran over the ojol driver who fell in the middle of the road. "There was a motorcycle taxi driver who fell and was hit. But the vehicle did not stop and just moved forward until it ran over the victim," Kevin told Tempo on Thursday night, August 28, 2025.
Kevin stated that initially, the authorities restrained the protesters in the area around the Pejompongan gas station. Around 7:25 PM local time, the police's tactical vehicle suddenly drove quickly in the middle of the road without paying attention to the gathered crowd.
In addition to running over the protesters, the police also fired tear gas towards the flats. "Even residents on the tenth floor could still smell the tear gas," Kevin said.
Kevin revealed that the tear gas was fired by the police from a distance of around 10 to 20 meters from the entry gate of the flats. "Elderly and children near the gate were also affected by the tear gas," Kevin said.
