Silent Hill f's Classification Under Review in Australia, Not Banned

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -  Silent Hill f recently faced scrutiny from the Australian Classification Board after it was initially denied a classification, sparking assumptions that the game had been banned in the country. However, the situation has since been clarified.

“Silent Hill f is not currently classified as ‘Refused Classification’ in Australia,” reads a statement from the Classification Board to Stevivor.

The original listing on the National Classification Database has been removed, now showing the message: “You are not authorized to access this page.”

According to the Board, the classification will be republished ahead of the game's official release.

Age classification has not been given to Silent Hill f for the Refused Classification (RC). Since 2013, Australia has allowed a specialized adult category for games (R18+).

Games are typically refused classification in Australia if they include depictions of sexual activity involving characters who appear to be under 18 years old.

The same restriction applies to content featuring visual portrayals of sexual violence or drug use.

Prior to the scrutiny surrounding Silent Hill f, Silent Hill: Homecoming was denied classification in 2008 due to scenes involving intense torture. At the time, Australia did not have an R18+ rating for games, which contributed to the refusal.

The suspected reason behind Silent Hill f's initial rejection lies in the use of a self-assessment tool managed by the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC).

This system allows developers to answer content-related questionnaires, which directly influence the game's provisional classification.

The tool has made mistakes in the past when classifying Kingdom Come: Deliverance. The game was banned by the system even though the decision was incorrect.

In Australia, all physical game releases must be assessed by the relevant Classification Board, overriding any automatic ratings.

However, Silent Hill f is the first game to receive an 18+ rating in Japan.

Silent Hill f follows the story of Hinako Shimizu, a teenager trapped in a mysterious town shrouded in thick fog. Hinako faces the terrifying threats of supernatural creatures while uncovering the dark secrets hidden within the town, cited from the website Konami.
