Singapore Flyer Suspends Operations Due to Technical Issues

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - One of the most iconic landmarks in Singapore, the Singapore Flyer, has temporarily halted operations due to technical issues. The problem was identified after a routine maintenance inspection at the ferris wheel.

The operator of the Singapore Flyer, Straco Leisure, stated that the suspension is a precautionary measure against undesired incidents. They confirmed that no one was on the ride when the malfunction was discovered on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, according to Travel and Tour World.

The routine maintenance of one of the world's largest ferris wheels is carried out in cooperation with the Building and Construction Authority (BCA). Despite the ferris wheel not operating, the shops and restaurants at the Singapore Flyer retail terminal remain open.

A spokesperson for the Singapore Flyer said they conduct routine maintenance inspections every day, both during operational hours and throughout the night. A BCA spokesperson told Channel News Asia that the technical issue was related to one of the spoke cables. The spoke cables support the outer rim of the giant observation wheel by holding it in a compressed state. Technicians are conducting inspections and tests before the ride can resume operation.

However, they have not confirmed when the ferris wheel will resume operational. "We are committed to working around the clock to resolve the matter. Flight operations will resume once all checks and tests have been completed," the spokesperson told CNA.

Visitors who have made prior bookings can contact the Straco customer service team for assistance, the company said. Those who made bookings through third-party platforms should contact their booking agents directly.

The History of the Singapore Flyer

The tourist attraction previously stopped operations in January 2022 after technical issues were found during routine maintenance inspections. The closure lasted for three months, and it only resumed operations in April 2022.

The ferris wheel experienced an incident in 2019, when 39 people on the ride had to be evacuated due to technical issues involving a spoke cable. In 2018, another technical issue resulted in the ride being closed for two months.

Launched in 2008, the Singapore Flyer stands at a height of 165 meters with a diameter of 150 meters, featuring 28 air-conditioned capsules, each capable of accommodating 28 passengers, and a three-story terminal building.

This Singapore Flyer reaches an overall height of 165 meters, making it the tallest ferris wheel in the world upon completion. This record was surpassed by the High Roller ferris wheel, which opened in 2014 in Las Vegas, USA, at a height of 167.6 meters.
