TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto departed from New York for Ottawa, Canada, on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, after attending the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
According to an official statement, President Prabowo's schedule in Canada includes a bilateral meeting with the Governor General of Canada, Mary Simon, at Rideau Hall. He is also set to have a one-on-one meeting with Prime Minister Mark Carney at the West Block, Parliament Hall.
A key agenda item is the signing of the Indonesia-Canada Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (ICA-CEPA), which marks Indonesia's first free trade agreement with a North American partner.
President Prabowo is accompanied by Minister of Investment and Industry Rosan Perkasa Roeslani and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya on his visit.
Key Moments at the United Nations
While in New York, President Prabowo delivered his inaugural speech at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. He expressed his honor at being given the third speaking slot, a position of respect typically reserved for major powers like Brazil and the United States.
In his speech, he reaffirmed Indonesia's consistent stance on advocating for world peace, with a particular focus on the conflict in Gaza. "Especially pushing for the resolution of conflicts in all places, but the most important for us is the cry of the suffering people of Gaza," he stated.
President Prabowo claimed that many countries viewed Indonesia's firm yet balanced perspective as a realistic approach to global issues.
Bilateral Meetings and Other Engagements
During his time at the UN, President Prabowo participated in the International High-Level Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Palestinian Issue and a Multilateral Meeting on the Middle East, held at the invitation of U.S. President Donald Trump.
He also held a bilateral meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Additionally, President Prabowo met with renowned philanthropist and co-founder of the Gates Foundation, Bill Gates, whom he honored with a token of appreciation for his dedication to the well-being of humanity.
