TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Java Police's bomb squad (Gegana) team has successfully evacuated a vintage grenade discovered by a resident in Solo, Central Java. The grenade was found in Debegan Village, Mojosongo Sub-district, Jebres District, on Thursday, September 18, 2025. Following the discovery, police immediately secured the location with crime scene tape.
Jebres Sub-district Police Chief, Commissioner Murtiyoko, confirmed the report of the grenade's discovery, stating that the call came in at 3:45 p.m. Western Indonesian Time. Security personnel were immediately dispatched to the site. “We received information that it is a hand grenade produced in 1953,” Murtiyoko told journalists in Solo.
He explained that the grenade was found by a resident named Gunawan, who works as a scrap collector. Gunawan purchased a collection of used items in the Singosaren area about two weeks prior. While sorting the items on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, he initially thought the object was just an antique piece. “Upon checking, it turned out to be a grenade,” he said.
Murtiyoko stated that it was not yet possible to confirm whether the grenade was still active. The immediate priority was to secure the area due to its potential danger. "We are more focused on securing the location because it is dangerous. The certainty of the grenade being active or not cannot be confirmed yet," he explained.
Gunawan, the person who found the grenade, explained that he did not know it was there. He obtained the grenade from a container of scrap he had purchased from an empty house.
"I didn't know that the grenade was there. Scrap items are sorted first. I found the grenade inside the container when it was opened," Gunawan said.
He promptly reported his discovery to the police to confirm what the item was. After it was confirmed to be a grenade, he left it untouched. "I immediately placed the item down and did not touch it again until the officers came to put up the crime scene tape. The tape was put up to secure the area. I was asked to stay away from the location," he added.
