TEMPO.CO, JakartaTaman Safari Indonesia has recently come under scrutiny following reports from several former Oriental Circus Indonesia (OCI) employees who alleged exploitation and human rights violations to the Ministry of Human Rights.

These individuals claimed to have endured various forms of maltreatment dating back to the 1970s, including physical assault, electrocution, forced separation from their children, compulsory labor in unsanitary conditions, and coerced consumption of animal waste.

Tony Sumampau, Commissioner of Taman Safari Indonesia, refuted the allegations that his company exploited OCI circus performers.

"What has been conveyed is entirely fabricated," Tony said in a message via WhatsApp on Tuesday, April 15, 2025. He clarified that OCI and Taman Safari Indonesia are distinct legal entities.

According to the official Taman Safari website, this zoological park was established in 1981 in Bogor, encompassing 55 hectares of land. While its inception dates back to 1981, Taman Safari Indonesia was officially inaugurated as a tourist attraction in 1990. Here are several key facts about Taman Safari Indonesia.

4 Key Facts About Taman Safari Indonesia

1. Founded by Three Brothers

Taman Safari Indonesia initially opened its zoological park in Cisarua, Bogor. It was founded by three brothers who were originally associated with the Oriental Circus Indonesia group: Jansen Manansang, Frans Manansang, and Tony Sumampau. They developed the zoo on 55 hectares of land that was previously unproductive plantation land in South Cisarua.

During the development of this modern zoological park, they engaged two consultants from Germany and the United States. The zoo commenced operations in April 1986 and was officially recognized as a national tourist attraction on March 16, 1990.

2. Home to Over 22,000 Animals

As reported on tamansafari.com, Taman Safari Indonesia initially housed 400 animals from 100 species originating from five continents. These included rhinoceroses, orangutans, and tigers. Over time, the animal collection has expanded significantly, now comprising over 22,000 animals representing 637 species across its various parks.

Specifically within Taman Safari Bogor, the animal population reaches 8,700 individuals from 400 species. Notable inhabitants include a pair of giant pandas imported from China, Cai Tao and Hu Chun, as well as six red pandas.

3. Establishment of Multiple Safari Parks Across Indonesia

Following its success in Bogor, Taman Safari has established several other animal parks throughout Indonesia. These include Taman Safari Prigen in East Java; Taman Safari Bali; Solo Safari in Central Java; Beach Safari Batang in Central Java; Marine Safari Bali; and Jakarta Aquarium.

Additionally, Taman Safari operates Enchanting Valley in Bogor. There are also reports of Taman Safari planning to construct an animal park in the new capital city of Nusantara or IKN in East Kalimantan.

4. Activities at Taman Safari Indonesia

Taman Safari Indonesia offers a diverse range of activities for visitors, including nocturnal safaris and opportunities for close-range animal feeding. The parks also feature numerous amusement rides. In Taman Safari Cisarua Bogor, for example, visitors can partake in trekking, outbound activities, and camping, alongside enjoying 25 amusement rides, 11 restaurants, and 20 shows.

For tours at Taman Safari Indonesia, visitors are required to purchase tickets with varying prices depending on the specific park location and the time of their visit. At Taman Safari Bogor, the price for a day safari entrance ticket starts at Rp150,000, while the night safari entrance ticket costs Rp180,000 for adults and Rp160,000 for children under five years old.
