TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - TEMPO has successfully secured a grant from the JournalismAI Innovation Challenge 2025 program, supported by the Google News Initiative. Tempo competed with 372 publishing companies worldwide in the selection process, before being selected along with 11 others to work on artificial intelligence (AI) projects for the next nine months.
Mat Cooke, Head of Ecosystem Investment Programs at Google News Partnership, said the program, in collaboration with JournalismAI at the London School of Economics, promotes experimentation, understanding, and the sharing of best practices for the advancement of the media business. He expressed enthusiasm for the ideas proposed by the grantees.
The 12 selected publishing companies represent 11 countries: Taiwan, Slovakia, Portugal, the Philippines, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, the United States, Spain, Italy, and Brazil. Tempo is the only Indonesian media outlet selected for the JournalismAI Innovation Challenge 2025 grant.
Charlie Beckeet, Director of JournalismAI at the London School of Economics, welcomed the program and the winners. "For quality journalism to thrive, it needs revenue, and this innovation aims to leverage AI to meet that need," Charlie said in an official statement on February 10, 2026.
For nine months following this announcement, the publishers awarded the grants will develop AI-based products that enhance audience intelligence and revenue growth. Each grantee will receive funding of US$50,000-US$100,000 to encourage AI literacy and implementation through targeted innovation and experimentation.
The project ideas from the 12 grantees range from tools to make climate journalism more accessible to audiences, to predicting the risk of subscriber loss and improving impact communication. Tempo, meanwhile, is proposing an artificial intelligence-powered archive platform to centralize these resources within a single digital asset management system.
Tempo calls this platform Tempo Assistant, which will help users explore news archives from decades past. This will allow users to easily find and access older publications without having to rummage through their print archives.
