TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chinese New Year holiday, or Imlek, is a popular opportunity for tourists to visit tourist attractions. One such destination is Borobudur Temple in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia. The largest Buddhist temple in Southeast Asia will offer a promotion for sunset and sunrise views from the top of the temple for Rp350,000 from February 14-17, and February 2-26.

Gistang Panutur, Commercial Director of InJourney Destination Management, said that the 2577 Kongzili Chinese New Year celebrations at Borobudur Temple present a harmonious blend of the splendor of historical heritage and the richness of Chinese tradition through the #ImlekdiCandi (Chinese New Year celebrations) campaign.

"The spirit of the Year of the Fire Horse is presented by preparing special events at Borobudur Temple Tourism Park and Prambanan Temple Tourism Park," he told Antara on Sunday, February 15, 2026.

According to Panutur, this year's Chinese New Year celebrations at the temple are designed to be an inclusive and joyful holiday destination for all groups. The planned agenda is not just a New Year's celebration, but also a moment for cultural acculturation. "The value of harmony in life is reflected in the traditions we maintain. We want to ensure that every visitor, both families and individuals, can experience the positive energy of this 'Year of the Horse' through an exciting, immersive, and unforgettable experience," said Gistang.

Barongsai or lion dance performances will be held at Borobudur and Prambanan Temples on February 17, 2026. The lion dance performance at Prambanan will be performed by the Naga Winongo Barongsai Association. Meanwhile, the lion dance performance at Borobudur Temple will be performed by the Panbers Jogja Association.

The performance will be accompanied by the thundering beats of drums and cymbals, a traditional tune believed to ward off bad luck and mark the beginning of a clean and vibrant new chapter.

This unique Chinese New Year attraction is presented not only to entertain tourists, but also as a form of respect and recognition of one of the traditions inherent in Indonesian society.

In addition to the lion dance and dragon dance performances, Borobudur and Prambanan Temples will feature a Wishing Wall Installation. Visitors can write their prayers and hopes on wishing cards. "These cards serve as visual symbols of aspirations for love, health, happiness, and good fortune that they wish to achieve in the new year, aligning with the philosophy of the temple as a place of worship and contemplation," said Gistang.
