TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The TikTok platform has started rolling out a new feature called Nearby Feed, allowing users to see content happening around their location. The feature is claimed to help users discover new nearby restaurants and interesting locations when traveling.
For the initial phase, the feature is available in the UK, France, Italy, and Germany. TikTok had previously tested a similar feature with some users in Southeast Asia in 2022. "Posts on the Nearby Feed are displayed to people based on location, content topics, and the time the content was uploaded," said TikTok, as cited from a TechCrunch report on December 4, 2025.
The company added that users can find local content related to travel, events, culinary, and other services based on their interests. "For content creators, this means their public uploads can be available to people in the city or region where they upload or tag the location or service," the company said.
TikTok emphasized that the location-sharing feature is optional and can only be used by users aged 18 and above. When activated, the app can use the device's GPS location when in use to provide more accurate recommendations. iOS users will also see a specific indicator when their location is being accessed. The company mentioned that it continues to collect and use location data in accordance with applicable laws.
Content from private accounts, users under 18, or posts with Friends or Only You settings will not appear on Nearby Feed. Users who want to see content from other regions can update their location settings, deemed useful for travel research.
In its blog, TikTok mentioned that Nearby Feed also supports the local economy by increasing visibility for small businesses, cultural institutions, and local creators. The company stated that this feature encourages discovery, direct visits, and engagement in the real world, including 46 percent of TikTok users in the UK who have visited stores, restaurants, or local destinations after seeing them on the platform.
Nearby Feed can be accessed through a special tab on the app's main page, which will display the user's location name instead of the word "Nearby". It is not yet known when this feature will be expanded to other regions.
