Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia mentioned the International Monetary Fund (IMF) policy as one of the main causes of the decline in Indonesia's oil and gas production (lifting migas) since the late 1990s. He stated that the IMF intervention during the 1998 monetary crisis has actually triggered the decline in the energy sector, which has not fully recovered to this day.

He then revealed that the IMF recommended revising the Oil and Gas Law as part of the national economic rescue package at that time. However, the impact turned out to be the opposite of the original intent.

3. House Urges Stricter Immigration Controls to Prevent Illegal Indonesian Hajj Pilgrimages

Chairperson of the House Hajj Supervisory Team, Cucun Ahmad Syamsurijal, urged immigration to tighten surveillance, especially for those heading to Saudi Arabia during the Hajj season.

Cucun stated that tightening immigration is essential to prevent the departure of Indonesian nationals to the holy land through illegal routes or using non-Hajj visas.

"The government must continue to convey that the regulations in Saudi Arabia during the Hajj month are very strict," said Cucun in a statement obtained by Tempo on Wednesday, June 4, 2025.
