TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Discussions surrounding global safety and security never lose their relevance. In a year where conflicts and instability often dominated headlines, the world has become less peaceful for the 13th time in the last 17 years, according to the Global Peace Index 2025.
Even so, many of the safest countries in the world continue to uphold peace in everyday life. The GPI 2025 evaluates nations across three key domains, including safety and security, ongoing conflict, and militarization.
At the very top of the list is Iceland, which has maintained its title as the safest country in the world since 2008. Iceland continues to lead in all peace-related categories, with a 2 percent improvement in its overall score.
Citizens enjoy a strong sense of personal safety, evident in the fact that walking alone at night is common and local police generally remain unarmed. Notably, Iceland has long held its position as the most peaceful country in the world.
Ireland and New Zealand are close behind, consistently ranking high in peace and stability. Ireland demonstrated further progress by reducing its level of militarization. Meanwhile, New Zealand stood out in the area of safety and security. Both nations are known for their stunning natural beauty and tight-knit communities, which contribute to a culture of peace.
Austria and Switzerland round out the top five, known globally for their political neutrality and commitment to education, healthcare, and civil trust, all of which foster trust and stability.
Among the top 10, Singapore takes the sixth position, making it the only Asian country on the list. Tiny but mighty, the city-state continues to impress with its high military expenditure per capita, strong law enforcement, and virtually non-existent internal conflict. Its streets remain some of the safest in the world—even late at night.
Other high-performing Asian countries include Japan and Malaysia, which, while not in the top 10, ranked within the top 15. Notably, Indonesia saw the largest improvement in Asia, with a 2.9% increase in its peacefulness score over 2024, according to The Straits Times.
To give you a clearer picture, here’s the updated list of the safest countries in the world based on the Global Peace Index 2025, published by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP):
