Tragedy Strikes as Aid Truck Overturns in Gaza, Killing at Least 20

A humanitarian aid truck overturned and crushed Palestinians in the central Gaza Strip in the early hours of Wednesday, August 6, 2025. As a result, at least 20 people were killed and dozens were injured, according to local authorities.

The incident occurred when aid seekers gathered in Central Gaza awaiting essential supplies amidst the dire humanitarian crisis engineered by the Israeli government.

Gaza authorities, as reported by WAFA and quoted by Anadolu, accused Israeli forces of deliberately directing the truck through unsafe and difficult-to-pass roads that had been previously bombed.

Gaza Civil Defense spokesperson Mahmud Bassal stated that 20 people died and dozens were injured in the incident while hundreds of civilian residents were waiting for aid.

“Despite the recent limited allowance of a few aid trucks, the occupation deliberately obstructs the safe passage and distribution of this aid,” said the Gaza Government Media Office in a statement as reported by Al Jazeera.

“It forces drivers to navigate routes overcrowded with starving civilians who have been waiting for weeks for the most basic necessities. This often results in desperate crowds swarming the trucks and forcibly seizing their contents.”

The tragic accident occurred as humanitarian organizations warned of spreading famine and diseases in the region, while deaths due to hunger and malnutrition continue to rise as Israel restricts aid supplies to the area.

Aid Delivery Remains Limited

Since the resumption of aid delivery on July 27, Gaza authorities have repeatedly accused Israel of attempting to sabotage aid distribution and "engineering chaos" in the enclave.

They claim that Israel has failed to ensure safety during aid distribution to the residents of Gaza. Israel's aid scheme has been heavily criticized as a "death trap" for starving civilians.

On Monday, Gaza authorities stated that since aid delivery resumed on July 27, Israel has only allowed 674 trucks to enter the area—only meeting about 14 percent of the population's needs.

Local authorities estimate that about 600 aid trucks per day are needed to meet the minimum needs of Gaza residents for food, essential goods, fuel, and medicine.

Jens Laerke, a spokesperson for the UN humanitarian agency (OCHA), stated that although some aid has entered the enclave, “there should be hundreds and hundreds of trucks entering Gaza every day for months or years to come.”

“People are dying every day. This is a crisis on the brink of famine,” he added, noting that tons of life-saving aid are still stuck at border crossings due to bureaucratic delays and lack of safe access.

The Ministry of Health stated that at least 1,568 aid seekers have been killed and 11,230 others injured due to Israeli fire near the US-managed aid distribution center in Gaza since May 27.

According to the Gaza Health Ministry, at least 188 people, including 94 children, have died from starvation and malnutrition since October 2023.

Israeli Strikes Kill Palestinians in Gaza

Elsewhere in Gaza, at least 23 Palestinian residents were killed in Israeli attacks in the enclave, medical sources informed Al Jazeera.

Al-Awda Hospital reported that five people, including a woman and two children, were killed and others were injured in an Israeli attack on a house north of the Nuseirat refugee camp.

Four others were killed in Israeli attacks on two houses in the Shujayea neighborhood in Gaza City.

The Israeli military, ignoring international calls for a ceasefire, has launched brutal attacks in Gaza since October 7, 2023, killing over 61,000 Palestinian residents, nearly half of whom are women and children. The Israeli military campaign has devastated the enclave and brought it to the brink of famine.

Last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its war in the enclave.
