Unpad Reports Instagram Account Hack to West Java Police

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Padjadjaran University (Unpad) has reported hacking its official Instagram account with the username @universitaspadjadjaran to the West Java Police, which occurred on Saturday afternoon, April 5, 2025.

Head of Public Communication Office Unpad, Dandi Supriadi, stated that the report was made today, Monday, April 7, 2025. ''This morning, the Unpad Legal Office team went to the police. Specifically to the West Java Police,'' he said when contacted by Tempo on Monday, April 7, 2025.

Because of the hack, some people have fallen victim to fraud. The perpetrators offered 25 grams of Antam gold for Rp10 million through two discounted posts. The actual price of the gold is around Rp40 million. Unpad received reports of the gold offer on Saturday afternoon around 2:00 PM WIB (Western Indonesia Time).

In response to the fraud case, Dandi stated that they have opened a complaint post through Unpad's official channels other than Instagram. ''So far, Unpad has not opened a complaint post. However, our channels other than IG remain open to receive reports,'' he said.

Before this, Dandi mentioned that Unpad had alerted the public about the hack and warned of scam attempts through another official Instagram account, @unpad. Unpad urged the public to maintain the security of their personal information, not to share passwords, and not to send money to the hacker's account. According to Dandi, they have not received reports of people being duped.

The gold offer was stated to be a promotional program for three people. The excuse given was that gold could be cheap because someone was going to donate, and the accumulated funds would be donated to Palestine. Orders could be made by contacting the listed contact number.

Last March, there was also fraud that impersonated Unpad outside of the official account. Open recruitment advertisements for prospective permanent Unpad lecturers have been circulating on social media since last year. The public was urged to be cautious of such information, as it was a potential form of fraud that could take and record personal data.

The fraudulent advertisement has been seriously monitored by Unpad since October 2024, directly reporting the account spreading information on Instagram as an account spreading spam. After the report, the fraudulent account could no longer be accessed. However, the recruitment information for potential permanent Unpad lecturers resurfaced using a different account.

According to Dandi, this situation makes it difficult to report to law enforcement, so Unpad has warned the public to beware of such fraudulent advertisements. In addition to being spread on Unpad's social media, the information is distributed through mass media and WhatsApp groups.
