US, Iran Reach Ceasefire Deal After Last-Minute Diplomatic Push

4 hours ago 9

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta A fragile pause in hostilities emerged on Tuesday evening as the United States and Iran agreed to a two-week conditional ceasefire, following a last-minute diplomatic push led by Pakistan

At 06:32 p.m. Washington time, Trump announced on his social media platform that both sides were “very far along” in reaching what he described as a “definitive” peace agreement.

If upheld, the ceasefire between Iran and the United States is expected to open a narrow two-week window for diplomacy, with delegations from both sides scheduled to meet in Islamabad on Friday, as per CNBC

The temporary truce was finalized just moments before the United States was expected to proceed with large-scale attacks if no agreement had been reached. The decision followed Iran's submission of what Trump described as a “workable” 10-point proposal, offering a potential pathway toward de-escalation, CNA reported.

In a statement posted online, President Donald Trump said the suspension of military action would depend on Iran agreeing to the “complete, immediate, and safe opening” of the Strait of Hormuz.

Shortly after the announcement, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed that Tehran had accepted the terms. He stated that, for the duration of the two-week period, safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz would be ensured in coordination with Iran’s Armed Forces.

According to The Guardian, President Donald Trump expressed confidence that ongoing negotiations could lead to a formal agreement, citing a 10-point proposal put forward by Tehran as the basis for talks.

The announcement of a potential ceasefire between Iran and the United States sparked a strong rally across global financial markets. Investors grew increasingly optimistic that a crisis which had unsettled the global economy for more than a month could soon move toward resolution.

Equity markets across Asia posted strong gains, with Seoul and Tokyo surging more than five percent, while Taipei rose by nearly four percent. Stocks in Sydney and Hong Kong also advanced by over two percent, joined by solid increases in Shanghai, Singapore, and Wellington.

Safe-haven assets and alternative investments also climbed in tandem. Gold gained roughly five percent, recovering as expectations around inflation and interest rates shifted, while Bitcoin moved higher alongside improving market sentiment.
