TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States is offering a reward of up to $10 million, or around Rp 167.8 billion, for information leading to the capture of two alleged leaders of Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel, a spokesperson for the US Department of State said on Thursday.
Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said that on February 26 the State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, through its Narcotics Rewards Program, announced rewards of up to $5 million each.
The offer applies to information leading to the capture and/or conviction, in any country, of alleged Tijuana Plaza bosses Rene Arzate-Garcia, also known as “La Rana,” and his brother Alfonso Arzate-Garcia, also known as “Aquiles.”
According to US authorities, the Arzate-Garcia brothers have controlled the Tijuana faction of the Sinaloa Cartel for around 15 years. In 2023, they were indicted in the United States over their alleged roles in an international drug trafficking network.
The US Department of Justice has charged Rene Arzate-Garcia with narco-terrorism, engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise, providing material support to foreign terrorist organizations, conspiracy to distribute narcotics internationally, and money laundering.
The reward offer was coordinated with the San Diego Division of the US Drug Enforcement Administration and the US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California.
In February 2025, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that Washington had designated eight criminal groups as Foreign Terrorist Organizations, including the Sinaloa Cartel, MS-13, and Tren de Aragua.
