TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran claimed on Sunday to have attacked three tanker ships belonging to the United States and the United Kingdom in the Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz using missiles, causing them to catch fire.
In a statement on the official news outlet of the IRGC, Sepah News, the Iranian military guard also claimed to have targeted U.S. military installations in Kuwait and Bahrain, as reported by Xinhua and cited by Antara.
The IRGC said that its attack on Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait had completely disabled the facility, destroyed three naval infrastructure buildings at the Mohammed Al-Ahmad naval base, and hit the command center and reserve of the U.S. naval force in Bahrain.
Another U.S. base in Bahrain was reportedly hit by two ballistic missiles. The IRGC claimed that the attack had caused 560 casualties among U.S. personnel, although the U.S. has not confirmed this report.
Following the announcement, Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Arsenio Dominguez urged shipping companies to exercise "maximum vigilance" and, if possible, avoid the affected areas.
Dominguez also emphasized that freedom of navigation is a "basic principle of international maritime law."
The IRGC attacks occurred a day after U.S. and Israel forces launched a large-scale attack on Iran, resulting in the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and several other high-ranking officials, triggering retaliatory strikes from Iran on U.S. and Israeli targets across the Middle East.
