US Once Again Vetoes UN Resolution for Gaza Ceasefire

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States has once again vetoed a draft resolution from the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) calling for a ceasefire in Gaza on Thursday, September 18, 2025. As reported by CNA, 14 other members supported the resolution prepared by ten non-permanent Council members since last August, following the UN's official declaration of famine in Gaza.

The resolution demands an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire to be respected by all parties, as well as the release of all hostages. However, like previous votes, the U.S. once again exercised its veto power. This marks the sixth time since the Israel-Hamas war almost two years ago.

Member States' Call

Before the vote, Danish Ambassador to the UN Christina Lassen said that the resolution must be a clear message that the Security Council will not turn away from civilians facing hunger, from hostages, and from the demand for a ceasefire. "A generation risks being lost not only to war, but to hunger and despair," she said.

From Algeria, Ambassador Amar Bendjama apologized. "Palestinian brothers, Palestinian sisters, forgive us. Forgive us, because the world speaks of rights, but denies them to Palestinians. Forgive us because our efforts, our sincere efforts, shattered against this wall of rejection," he said, as reported by Al Jazeera.

Bendjama noted that the war in Gaza has killed more than 18,000 children, 12,000 women, over 1,400 medical workers, and more than 250 journalists.

Reasons for the U.S. Rejection

U.S. Deputy Special Envoy for the Middle East Morgan Ortagus said that her country's rejection was not surprising. "It fails to condemn Hamas or recognise Israel’s right to defend itself, and it wrongly legitimises the false narratives benefitting Hamas, which have sadly found currency in this council," she said. She also mentioned that the UN's famine declaration last month was based on flawed methodology.

Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour described the U.S. veto as regrettable because it prevents the Security Council from playing its role. "This demonstrates that when it comes to atrocity crimes, the use of the veto should simply not be allowed," he said.

Meanwhile, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon condemned the resolution. He said for some Council members, this is just a show, but for Israel, this is an everyday reality. Danon emphasized that Israel does not need justification for the war in Gaza and thanked the United States for the veto.
