US Urges UN to Oust Francesca Albanese from Palestine Rapporteur Role

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States has once again urged the United Nations to remove Francesca Albanese from her position as the Special Rapporteur for the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territories since 1967.

In an official statement released by the U.S. Mission to the UN on July 1, 2025, Washington expressed deep concerns to UN Secretary-General António Guterres, requesting that Albanese be condemned and removed from her position.

"The United States once again expressed its grave concerns to UN Secretary-General António Guterres about the continued activities of Francesca Albanese, the 'United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967,' and again called upon the Secretary-General to condemn her activities and call for her removal," the statement said.

The U.S. asserts that failure to act on this request would discredit the UN and require specific action on allegations of violations committed by Albanese.

Report on the Economics of Genocide

The latest demand comes after Albanese published a report titled From Economy of Occupation to Economy of Genocide, accusing several major companies, including those from the U.S., Mexico, and China, of complicity in genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza.

As cited on the official UN website, Albanese wrote, "Israel’s settler-colonial occupation has transformed into an insidious, bureaucratic and militarized regime of destruction — a calculated economy of genocide."

According to Al Jazeera, the report will be presented at a press conference in Geneva, Switzerland, on Thursday, July 2, 2025. This report is the initial part of an investigation into thousands of entities being investigated by the Special Rapporteur's mandate.

Biased Allegations and Misuse of Mandate

The U.S. government stated that in recent weeks, Albanese had sent threatening letters to dozens of entities worldwide, including large U.S.-based companies.

The letters, according to Washington, contained flawed legal arguments and conveyed extreme allegations that these companies were involved in grave human rights abuses, apartheid, and genocide.

Washington also accused Albanese of spreading antisemitism and supporting terrorism.

"Ms. Albanese’s malignant antisemitism and support for terrorism is conduct which renders her unfit to serve as Special Rapporteur," their statement read on the U.S. Mission to the United Nations' website.

Additionally, the U.S. stated that Albanese had misinterpreted her qualifications as an international law expert, as she had never passed a bar exam or obtained a license to practice law.

Strong Reaction from the Zionist Jewish Community and Pro-Israel Groups

Criticism of Francesca Albanese also came from international Jewish pro-Zionist organizations and pro-Israel groups.

The World Jewish Congress (WJC), cited in The Times of Israel, stated that the report reflects bias and misuse of the mandate.

"Ms. Albanese’s report is yet another example of her repeated misuse of her mandate to advance a political agenda rather than to uphold the universal principles of human rights," said WJC Executive Vice President Maram Stern.

Francesca Albanese, an Italian citizen, is known as a vocal critic of Israel and has long been the center of attention for her statements deemed offensive.

In February 2024, Albanese drew condemnation when she stated that the victims of Hamas attacks were not killed because they were Jewish, but as a response to Israeli oppression.
