TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian volleyball star Megawati Hangestri Pertiwi has officially joined PBV Petrokimia Gresik. The club announced the signing of the Jember, East Java native via their official Instagram account on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.

"Megawati up on The Bulls," the club posted, emphasizing their commitment to player health and safety while urging fans to support their new addition.

PBV Petrokimia Gresik is one of the accomplished volleyball clubs in the country, having won the Livoli Main Division in 2003, 2004, and 2005, and the Livoli Division 1 title in 2008.

Megawati Hangestri's successful period in the South Korean Volleyball League has concluded. She opted not to renew her contract with the Daejeon Jung Kwan Jang Red Sparks. Over the past two seasons in the V-League, Megawati and the Red Sparks formed a formidable and widely recognized partnership.

In her first season in 2023-2024, Megawati led the Red Sparks with 736 points, ranking seventh overall in the league and helping the team reach the playoffs for the first time in seven years.

Her performance soared in the recently concluded 2024-2025 V-League season, where she scored 802 points, only behind Gyselle Silva (GS Caltex) and Viktoriia Danchak (IBK Altos). Megawati also led the league in overall attack success rate with an impressive 48.06 percent.

This performance propelled the Red Sparks to their first V-League final appearance in 13 years. Despite a hard-fought effort, they ultimately finished as runners-up after a competitive series against the champions, Pink Spiders.

Megawati's departure from the Red Sparks, despite a contract offer, is reportedly due to her desire to return to Indonesia to care for her ailing mother. Her agent, citing Yonhap News, stated, "Mega is happy with her two years with Red Sparks and was ready to renew. But her dedication to her parents, especially her mother's poor health, prevents her from continuing in the V-League."

The Red Sparks have confirmed her departure, expressing their sadness at losing a "great, warm, and dedicated player." A club spokesperson told Yonhap News, "We support Mega's new adventure and hope to work with her again someday."
