James Stephen Donaldson, widely known as MrBeast, has made history on YouTube by becoming the first creator to reach 400 million subscribers. This remarkable achievement was recognized by YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, who presented MrBeast with a unique Play Button trophy as a token of appreciation for his extraordinary feat.
YouTube has a tradition of awarding creators with Play Button trophies based on their subscriber milestones. For example, a creator with 1 million subscribers receives a Gold Play Button, while a creator with 100 million subscribers receives the Red Diamond Play Button.
Since no creator had ever reached the 400 million subscriber milestone before, YouTube designed a special, one-of-a-kind trophy specifically for MrBeast.
The 400 million subscriber Play Button trophy features a modern and futuristic design with an elegant silver base and the iconic Play Button symbol adorned with brilliant blue crystals. This trophy design merges future aesthetics with YouTube's classic identity, honoring MrBeast's unprecedented achievement.
On June 1, 2025, MrBeast surpassed the 400 million subscriber mark, overtaking T-Series, which had previously held the top position with 299 million subscribers.
A month after receiving the trophy, MrBeast shared the moment on Instagram, posting a photo of himself with YouTube CEO Neal Mohan with the caption, "400,000,000 Subscriber Play Button! Thank you YouTube."
MrBeast's Career Journey and Achievements
As cited from the MrBeast Fandom, MrBeast was born in Wichita, Kansas, on May 7, 1998. He began his YouTube career at the age of 13 in 2012, initially uploading videos related to the game Minecraft.
Shortly thereafter, he diversified his content to include other games like Pokémon Online, Black Ops 2, and Battle Pirates, before creating a series of videos discussing the earnings of various YouTubers.
In 2016, MrBeast gained widespread recognition with his "Worst Intros" series, which featured humorous reviews and critiques of intros made by young creators. These videos have since been deleted from his channel, marking a pivotal shift in his content strategy.
Over time, MrBeast shifted his content to focus on large-scale challenges involving multiple people and fantastic cash prizes. This new approach significantly propelled his name and popularity on YouTube. MrBeast is now renowned for challenge videos that require participants to endure extreme situations, complete difficult tasks, or compete for large prizes.
The decision to create videos on a grander scale with bigger prizes has been immensely successful. In April 2021, he reached 60 million subscribers, followed by 100 million subscribers in July 2022. On May 5, 2023, MrBeast hit 150 million subscribers, and on October 14, 2023, he became the first creator to reach 200 million subscribers.
He did not stop there, reaching 300 million subscribers on July 10, 2024, and ultimately making history again on June 1, 2025, with 400 million subscribers.
MrBeast's Personal Life and Philanthropy
In addition to his success on YouTube, MrBeast has an intriguing personal life. He resides in Greenville, North Carolina, and is currently in a relationship with YouTuber and writer Thea Booysen, who is also known for her content on the Twitch platform.
MrBeast is widely known for being highly goal-oriented and frequently uses the wealth he has accumulated from YouTube for philanthropic purposes. He has carried out numerous social programs, including large-scale donations for humanitarian aid, building shelters for those in need, and supporting other charitable organizations.
