Xi Jinping on US Relations: 'We Should Be Partners, Not Rivals'

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chinese President Xi Jinping told his American counterpart President Donald Trump that the two countries should be "partners, not rivals." This was revealed by Xi when the two leaders met in Beijing on Thursday, May 14, 2026, as reported by Anadolu.

In his opening remarks at the Great Hall of the People, Xi said that China and the United States would both benefit from cooperation and lose from confrontation.

"We should help each other succeed, prosper together, and find the right way for major countries to get along in the new era," Xi said.

He stated that the two countries have "more common interests than differences," adding that the success of one country is an opportunity for the other.

According to Xi, a stable bilateral relationship would also be beneficial for the world.

Xi expressed readiness to discuss various strategic issues for both countries and the international community with Trump.

Xi hoped that 2026 would be a "historic landmark year" that opens a new chapter in the China-US bilateral relationship.

Xi Jinping earlier greeted Trump upon his arrival at the East Gate at the Great Hall of the People, exchanging introductions of the respective countries' delegations. 

Xi is accompanied by several high-profile officials, including Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Secretariat Cai Qi, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Defense Minister Dong Jun, Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao, Chairperson of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) Zheng Shanjie.

Meanhwile, from the US, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Elon Musk (CEO of Tesla and SpaceX), Ryan McInerney (CEO of Visa), Jensen Huang (CEO of NVIDIA), Tim Cook (CEO of Visa), and others were in attendance.
