TEMPO.CO, Jakarta New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced Tuesday, August 25, that his office will offer 1,000 tickets to the US Open tennis tournament to city residents at a discounted price of $100 each.

As reported by USA Today, the tickets will go on sale online at 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 26, on a first-come, first-served basis. Each resident can purchase up to two tickets for matches scheduled between August 30 and September 8.

“Sports belong to the people,” Mamdani said in a statement announcing the offer. “If the world’s best tennis players are coming to our city, New Yorkers should be able to see them play.”

The offer is part of Mamdani’s broader efforts to make New York City more affordable. The Democratic Socialist mayor campaigned on lowering the cost of living and has increasingly focused on access to major sporting events.

The discounted tickets could allow New Yorkers to watch some of the world's top players, including defending champions Carlos Alcaraz and Aryna Sabalenka, for substantially less than regular ticket prices.

As of Tuesday evening, tickets for the opening session sold through the US Open started at $239 and exceeded $1,200, USA Today reported.

Mamdani’s office previously said the discounted tickets were being offered in partnership with the United States Tennis Association (USTA).

Craig Tiley, CEO of the USTA, said the initiative would expand access to the tournament for New York residents.

“We want as many people as possible to experience tennis and the US Open,” Tiley said, adding that access to tennis would remain a priority for the organization.

The US Open ticket offer is the latest sports-related affordability initiative by Mamdani's administration.

The city previously offered 1,000 tickets to New Yorkers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup at $50 each. It also organized free public viewing events for World Cup matches and established 130 locations where residents could watch the New York Knicks during their NBA Finals run.

The initiative comes as affordability and the cost of living remain major political issues in the United States. Mamdani has made reducing living costs a central theme of his administration, while Democrats have increasingly emphasized the issue amid continuing economic pressures.

The White House, meanwhile, has defended President Donald Trump's economic policies, pointing to job, wage and economic growth during his first term and arguing that the administration's current policies will produce further gains.

For New Yorkers, the US Open offer provides a chance to attend one of the world's biggest tennis tournaments at a fraction of the usual ticket prices.
