4 Tips for Solo Female Travelers to Avoid Harassment

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Women's interest in solo traveling is increasing in 2025. However, if you are traveling alone for the first time, you may feel anxious. A solo traveler shared her experience to ensure the safety of women traveling alone on Reddit.

Previously, female traveler Aleaya Duran warned about two popular backpacking destinations that solo travelers should avoid. She had a difficult time during her vacation in Palawan, Philippines. At that time, there was a typhoon season, so flights were often canceled.

The 22-year-old woman told the Daily Mail, she was more worried about her safety because of the harassment from the locals.

Aleaya also recommends that solo female travelers avoid Cambodia. This is mainly due to her experience of feeling the least safe when visiting the country.

Here are some tips to avoid harassment for solo female travelers.

1. Wear fake rings

A female traveler on Reddit suggested wearing minimal jewelry during international trips. If you are afraid of men harassing you, just wear cheap and fake rings. According to her, some men may misinterpret a woman traveling alone as someone looking for a romantic partner. It could happen in the United States or English-speaking countries.

2. Engage in fake conversations

If faced with unsafe situations, such as dealing with suspicious taxi drivers, experienced travelers suggest doing a little light acting. Pretending to be chatting with someone.

She reminded us that the most important thing is not to let anyone know you are traveling alone. A little lying can help get out of uncomfortable situations.

3. Invest in a location tracker

To increase safety, you can use portable tracking devices, such as Tile, which is quite popular among solo female travelers who want to stay safe while traveling alone. The Reddit user added that she also has the device for comfort on solo trips.

She said it is not a bad idea to share with friends and family where you are going and do some checks, but do not post anything on public social media that you are alone.

4. Do not drink alcohol

Even though tempted to relax and try local wines and cocktails, the Reddit user, who often travels, warns not to drink excessively as a solo female traveler. She usually drinks alcohol at hotel restaurants or inns. It's better to be careful with mixed alcoholic drinks, plus air travel, jet lag, and altitude, which can disrupt the next trip.
