5 Epic Filming Locations from 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning', From Norway to South Africa

1 month ago 27

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -  Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning is easily one of the year’s most eagerly awaited blockbusters. As the eighth and final installment in the iconic franchise, it marks the end of Ethan Hunt’s globe-trotting journey, once again led by Tom Cruise. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the film takes audiences across breathtaking international locations, from the icy Arctic to the sun-drenched Mediterranean.

In this final chapter, Ethan Hunt and his IMF team face off against their most dangerous adversary yet: the Entity, a rogue artificial intelligence hidden aboard a submarine in the Arctic Circle.

With the fate of humanity hanging in the balance, the team races across the globe to prevent catastrophe. Alongside Cruise, the cast features Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, Hayley Atwell as Grace, Nick Offerman as Sydney, Pom Klementieff as Paris, Angela Bassett as Erika Sloane, Mariela Garriga as Marie, and Esai Morales as the villainous Gabriel.

Here’s a closer look at the film’s spectacular shooting locations:

1. Norway

Norway’s dramatic scenery takes center stage, with action-packed scenes shot in the snowy wilderness of Svalbard. Despite the extreme cold, the beauty of this remote location was highlighted in Tom Cruise’s behind-the-scenes social media posts. Additional Norwegian sites include Aurland in Vestland—a picturesque fjord village—and famous landmarks such as Stigfossen Waterfall, Oslo’s Royal Palace, Geirangerfjord, the Floibanen Funicular in Bergen, and the Lofoten Islands.

2. Malta

Valletta, the capital of Malta, served as a key filming hub. While details remain under wraps, fans can expect to see the island's iconic coastlines and centuries-old architecture in the movie. Popular attractions in the area include the ancient walled city of Mdina, the scenic Gozo and Comino Islands, the catacombs of St. Paul in Rabat, Mellieha’s beaches, and Valletta’s many historic landmarks.

3. South Africa

South Africa offers a rich visual backdrop for several thrilling sequences. The film was shot in locations such as Kruger National Park, the Drakensberg Mountains, and Port Edward. One standout scene features Tom Cruise piloting a biplane over the majestic Blyde River Canyon in Mpumalanga.

Filming also took place near the charming town of Hoedspruit. Other must-see attractions in South Africa include Cape Town’s Table Mountain and Robben Island, Durban’s beaches, Addo Elephant National Park, Johannesburg’s historic sites, and the whale-watching haven of Hermanus.

4. England

The production also traveled across England, capturing scenes at Westminster Abbey—a rare filming location—and the scenic Lake District National Park. London settings include the Natural History Museum, Trafalgar Square, and South Kensington.

Additional filming reportedly took place in the Buttermere Valley and Middleton Mine in the Peak District, though it’s unclear if those locations will appear in the final cut.

5. Puglia, Italy (Aboard the USS George H.W. Bush)

While no scenes were filmed on land in Italy, some dramatic sequences were shot aboard the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier, anchored off the coast of the Puglia region. This southern Italian area is known for its coastal charm and historic towns, including Bari’s Swabian Castle, the fairytale trulli houses in Alberobello, the Baroque architecture of Lecce, the cliffs of Polignano a Mare, and the stunning Salento Peninsula.
