TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has reported that a tectonic earthquake struck the area of Papua New Guinea on Saturday, April 5, 2025, at 03:04:39 AM Western Indonesian Time (WIB).
According to the agency's analysis, the quake's strength has been revised to magnitude 6.8. Its epicenter was located at coordinates 6.25 degrees South latitude and 151.77 degrees East longitude, at a depth of 26 kilometers below the Earth's surface.
"Based on the earthquake's epicenter and hypocenter, this was a shallow earthquake caused by movements in the Earth's outer layer. The ground moved downwards during this quake (a normal fault)," explained Daryono, the Head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center at BMKG, on Saturday.
As of this publication, based on computer models of potential tsunamis and measurements of sea levels by BMKG, this earthquake is not expected to create a tsunami in the area of Indonesia.
As of 03:55 AM WIB, BMKG's monitoring has recorded one smaller aftershock. People are advised to stay calm and not believe rumors that have not been confirmed.
