87 Indonesian Students Impacted by Trump's Policy at Harvard

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) has spoken out about the policy of United States President Donald Trump which has an impact on Indonesian students at Harvard University.

Kemlu spokesman Rolliansyah Soemirat alias Roy emphasized that his agency is paying attention to Trump's policy which prohibits one of the best universities in the US from accepting international students.

"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to closely monitor developments in US immigration policy, including the prohibition on Harvard University from accepting foreign students," Roy said in his official statement, Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

Roy said that the policy has created uncertainty for the fate of international students from various countries studying at Harvard University, including 87 students from Indonesia.

Furthermore, Roy explained that the Indonesian representative in the United States has been in intensive communication with Indonesian students at Harvard University during the legal process in court taken by the campus. The Indonesian representative appealed to Indonesian students at Harvard to remain calm.

Roy also emphasized that the Indonesian Representative in the US is ready to provide consular assistance to Indonesian students affected by Trump's policy. "The Indonesian government has also expressed its concerns about this issue to the US government and hopes that there will be a solution that does not harm the fate of Indonesian students at Harvard University," he said.

Not stopping there, Roy also touched on the role of Indonesian students in the development of science at Harvard University. "Indonesian students in the US have made many important contributions to the advancement of education and science in the US," he said.

Previously, Donald Trump revoked Harvard University's permission to accept and retain foreign students. However, United States District Judge Allison D. Burroughs immediately issued a temporary suspension order to block the decision on Friday, May 23, 2025.

US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem accused Harvard of fostering violence, antisemitism, and coordinating with the Chinese Communist Party. Noem cited the university's alleged failure to address these issues and its refusal to comply with the government's request for detailed records of the history of international student discipline and protest activities.
