TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Passenger traffic at Adisutjipto Airport in Yogyakarta has increased. However, the airport in Sleman Regency is more like an alternative airport after the operation of Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) as the main airport in Yogyakarta, located in Kulon Progo Regency.
Unlike YIA, which serves international flights, Adisutjipto Airport mostly operates ATR aircraft or short-haul regional passenger aircraft such as Yogyakarta-Jakarta, Yogyakarta-Karimunjawa, and other short routes.
The General Manager of Adisutjipto Airport, Wibowo Cahyono Soekadi, stated that as of November, the number of passengers at Adisutjipto Airport reached 118,971, a 2 percent increase compared to 2024, which saw 116,292 passengers," he said on Tuesday, December 2, 2025.
ATR Aircraft
Cahyono believes that the increase in the number of passengers provides an indication that air transportation using ATR aircraft has become more popular, especially for those traveling short distances and using small-capacity aircraft.
He mentioned that flights at Adisutjipto Airport using ATR aircraft are operated by Citilink and Fly Jaya airlines, as well as Cessna aircraft by Susi Air. The routes served by these airlines include Halim Perdana Kusuma Jakarta, Husein Sastranegara Bandung, Dewandaru Karimunjawa, and Nusawiru Cijulang Pangandaran.
Out of the 118,971 passengers, the route with the highest traffic to and from Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta recorded 117,302 passengers.
"We anticipate that with the approaching year-end holiday season, passenger movement will continue to increase," he said.
This is due to the increasing number of aircraft traffic and the upcoming Christmas 2025 and New Year 2026 holiday periods, which will be the main factors contributing to the increase in the number of passengers.
In addition to the number of passengers, the number of aircraft movements also saw a significant increase. He noted that as of November 2025, there were 2,895 aircraft movements, a 14 percent increase compared to the same period in 2024, which saw 2,536 aircraft movements.
In anticipation of the increased traffic at Adisutjipto Airport, various preparations have been made, including ensuring that all flight support equipment and facilities are functioning properly. Comprehensive monitoring and oversight are also being conducted both airside and landside to ensure airport operations run smoothly.
YIA Airport Dominates 95 Percent
The Acting Head of the Central Statistics Agency of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Herum Fajarwati, revealed the overall air passenger movement through the two airports in Yogyakarta. The passenger movement at YIA still dominates 95 percent of the total air transportation service users, with the remaining 5 percent passing through Adisutjipto Airport.
For example, in October 2025, the total number of domestic air passengers arriving in the Special Region of Yogyakarta reached 173,291, an increase of 10.67 percent compared to the 156,581 recorded in September 2025.
The passengers arriving through YIA totaled 164,736, accounting for 95.06 percent of the total passengers, while those arriving through Adisutjipto Airport numbered 8,555, or 4.94 percent.
The number of passengers arriving via YIA increased by 10.17 percent from 149,524 in September 2025 to 164,736.
The largest increase in the number of passengers came from Syamsudin Noor Airport-Banjarmasin with a 33.42 percent increase, followed by Soekarno-Hatta Airport-Jakarta with an 18.79 percent increase, Hasanuddin-Makassar with an 8.68 percent increase, and Sepinggan-Balikpapan with a 6.54 percent increase. On the other hand, the number of passengers arriving from Ngurah Rai Airport-Denpasar decreased by 0.73 percent.
The total number of passengers arriving through Adisutjipto Airport in October 2025 also saw a 21.23 percent increase compared to the previous month. The number of passengers arriving totaled 8,555, with 8,486 from Halim Perdana Kusuma Airport-Jakarta, 39 from Dewadaru-Karimunjawa Airport, 13 from Juanda Airport-Surabaya, and 17 from other airports.
