AGO Investigates Alleged Corruption in Laptop Procurement at Indonesia's Education Ministry

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Attorney General's Office (AGO) is investigating allegations of corruption in the digitalization of education through the procurement of Chromebook laptops at the Ministry of Education and Culture (Kemendikbudristek) in the period of 2019-2023.

The Attorney General's Office spokesperson, Harli Siregar, stated that the Deputy Attorney General for Special Crimes (Jampidsus) investigators are delving into allegations of a conspiracy involving various parties directing the technical team to conduct a technical study related to the procurement of educational technology equipment in 2020.

"In order to focus on the use of laptops based on the Chrome operating system," he said in Jakarta on Monday, May 26, 2025.

However, he mentioned that the use of Chromebooks was not a necessity, as a trial of 1,000 Chromebook units by Pustekom Kemendikbudristek in 2019 was ineffective.

"Why was it ineffective? Because we know that it is internet-based, while the internet in Indonesia is not consistent everywhere," he said.

From that experience, the technical team recommended using specifications with the Windows operating system. However, at that time, Kemendikbudristek replaced that study with a new one recommending the use of the Chrome operating system.

Regarding the budget, the spokesperson stated that the procurement cost amounted to Rp9.982 trillion.

This nearly tens of trillion budget consisted of Rp3.582 trillion in educational unit funds (DSP) and around Rp6.399 trillion from special allocation funds (DAK).

After the indications were found, Jampidsus raised the status of the case from the investigation stage to the prosecution stage on May 20, 2025.
